Description & Remarks

An evergreen, low tree (or high shrub), 1-5 (to 10) m. tall. The level of development and size of the tree are affected by the magnitude of damage caused by man and livestock. In spring the tree sheds its old leaves after new bright green leaves develop. The dark leaves are one year old, female acorns are 1 or 2 years old.
The tree bears on different branches staminate flowers in catkins and female acorn cupules (developing in 2 years). Therefore the tree is considered to be monoecious.
Q. coccifera dominates the Mediterranean marquis, from the Judean Mountains to the Upper Galilee and the Golan. In few sacred burial places lone trees are protected from clearing and grazing, therefore they are ancient, high and have thick trunks.
After burning the sprouting new leaves have spiny margins. The accepted assumption is that its purpose is protection from butterflies caterpillars, as in many other trees in the world. After fires the tree develops many branches from dormant hidden buds in the trunk base.
The fruit base attached to the cupule is not bitter and eaten by birds like jays or rodents like field mice. The fruit upper part which contains the embryo is bitter and not eaten by birds and rodents. These animals bury the remains of the acorns in the soil or between stones, assisting their distribution.
In the past the tree was classified as Q. calliprinos, but now it is included in Q. coccifera which is widespread all over the Mediterranean basin.
