Description & Remarks

Oxalis pes-capre is a synanthropic weed with fantastic multiplication and dispersal abilities. This phenomenon is strange considering the fact that non of the millions of flowers in this country bears fruits and seeds. It multiplies by bulbils (small bulbs) which develop on its vertical thizomes (Fig. 3). When the gardener pulls the whole plant, including the rhizomes, the bulbils remain in the soil and start developing independently. If the bulbil is developed in an non-appropriate depth it produces a thick juicy root (Fig. 3) which anchors in the soil and start drying from its upper part. Hence, upon contracting it pulls the bulbil to the right depth.Such roots are known in the geophytes studies as “contractile roots”. Oxalis bulbils are one of the favorable kind of food consumed by the young moles. The mother-mole often collects O. pescapre bulbs and leave them in the “giving birth” chamber of the mole. Bulbs left by the young moles sprout and produce roots in formerly non-populated sites. Such populations look like large circular patches. In South Africa, its origin area, the O. pes-capre populations the populations have three types from the length ratios of stamens and styles. Fertilization and fruit setting takes place only if pollen of the type of long stamens and short styles arrive to flowers with short stamens and long styles. Only bulbils of one type arrived to Israel and therefore only vegetative reproduction is possible.
