Description & Remarks

A coarse annual plant, with soft hairs, 25-60 cm in height. Leaves palmate compound, with 8-13 elongated lobed caniculate leaflets. The elongated inflorescence is located at the top of the round stem, made up of whorls of flowers. The flowers are large, pea-shaped, dark blue in color, and 2-2.5 cm in size. The banner petal has a white marking that turns purplish as the flower matures – the mature flowers at the bottom of the inflorescence have a purple marking, while the younger upper flowers have white markings. The seed-pod is hairy, and coarse, and 5-8 cm in length, with several large seeds. As the pod dries, it opens and the seeds fall down, close to the parent plant. The seeds are round, flattened, light-colored with stains, 10-12 across.

The plant grows in various soils in herbaceous pastures, shrubberies and edge of maquis. Iit is scattered to common in northern Israel, and can sometimes cover an entire area (Tut stream, slopes of the upper hilly Jordan River basin, etc.). Rare in Judea, Samaria, and the Shefela (Tel Soho). This species is currently used for gardening and on roadsides, and it is important to differentiate between natural populations and those that have been planted (e.g. at the Re’em Junction).
