Description & Remarks

A rare plant that we found new to Jordan in 2014. The closest locations were in N Iraq, but since then it was found in N Saudi-Arabia as well. In Jordan it is known in Jebel Um Adami and in the fields around Rijif – Ras A-Nakeb. It is a hairless and waxy annual, up to 30 cm tall. Leaves clasping, eared at base, Flowers small pale yellow, in racemes at the edges of stems. As in all Isatis species, pedicels erect in flowering stage and pend at fruit set, hence the fruits pend like earrings. The fruit is an indehiscent winged discoid silicle, 1.2 cm across, heat-shaped at base; fruit surface tomentose, except for wing, which is 4-5 mm wide, dark veined. Style persistent in fruit.
