Description & Remarks

A medium sized annual (to 45 cm), common mainly in heavy soils in the north and centre of Israel.
The stems and the leaves are dark green, covered with erected dense uneven hairs which are unpleasant to touch. The leaves are oval.
The inflorescence is long, many flowered and is scorpion-tail like (curling at the end) as in other Heliotropium species (the genus is named after that).
The flowers are big relatively to other species in this genus in the country (3-5 mm). The corolla limb is wide and spread, has a big yellow stain (covering more than half of it) that becomes grey after pollination. The corolla tube is hairy inside and outside and has prominent lengthwise ribs. The petal lobes are rounded.
H. suaveolens also has relatively big flowers and rounded petal lobes, but the yellow stain in the flower is much smaller and constricted to the throat, its corolla tube is not ribbed and has no hairs inside, and its leaf and stem hairiness is thin, gentle and a bit silvery.
H. europaeum and H. supinum have also rounded petal lobes, but their hairiness is different, their flowers are tiny and the yellow stain in them is hardly visible.
H. myosotoides has small teeth between the petal lobes and H. bacciferum is a prostrate plant of warm deserts and has lanceolate elongated leaves. The other species in the country have pointed petal lobes.
