Description & Remarks

A small to medium annual, 30 (40) cm tall. Common in batha, roadsides, heavy soils and disturbed habitats, from north Israel to the northern Negev. The plant is vivid green.
The stems and calyxes are covered with erect, short and dense equal hairs.
The inflorescence is scorpion-tail like (curling at the end).
The flowers are tiny (about 2 mm across), white with a small yellow stain around the throat that is sometimes hardly visible. The petal lobes are rounded, ovate. The fruit is composed of 2-4 very small mericarps.
Heliotropium europaeum differs from H. hirsutissimum and from H. suaveolens by its small flower and the vivid green colour, and differs from H. supinum by the colour and hairyness (supinum is greyish) and by the number of mericarps (spinum has one big smooth egg shaped nutlet). It differs from H. myosotoides by the absence of the small teeth between the petal lobes, and from the rest of the species in Israel by its rounded petal lobes.
