Description & Remarks

Glabrous annuals growing near water in vernal ponds, ditches, water reserves, streams, marshes and swamps.

Due to the spikelets’ brown median stripe and green margins, botanists and plant photographers in Israel are prone to confuse this species with C. glaber L., but these two are very different in habit. C. glaber is a much larger plant with wider and longer spikelets and sharp glums, very similar in general appearance to C. flavidus Retz.. C. fuscus, on the other hand, is a delicate plants with smaller spikelets and weakly tapering glums. C. fuscus is very similar to C. difformis L., but differs in the shape of the glums.

C. fuscus is the most common annual Cyperus in Israel, and occur from the northern Negev to Mt. Hermon, in both natural and disturbed habitats. The spikelets’ color is highly variable, and sometimes mature spikelets may be bright yellowish-green, while young spikelets might show a dark brown median stripe.
