Description & Remarks
An annual summer weed the individuals of which look like a ball when ripe. They become disconnected and roll as a tumble weed thus distributing seeds. In the original study of Ilan Zaharoni and Uri Eliav, they discovered that insects boring in the stem base lead to their disconnection and rolling by the wind. The plant is common as a weed in cereal fields or areas that were plowed in winter and were not planted during the summer. It also grows in the sides of roads sprayed with herbicides.
