Description & Remarks
A bulbous geophyte with whitish flowers, blooming takes place at the end of spring when most other herbaceous plants are dry.
The status of this species in still not clear. Brullo et al described the populations of Allium pallens in our region as Allium nazarenum with a typical subspecies in the Mediterranean region and ssp. ramonense in the Negev Highlands. The typical subspecies has larger plants, purplish anthers and spathe that is longer than the inflorescence. Ssp ramonense is a smaller plant with yellowish anthers and spathe about the size of the inflorescence or shorter. According to Brullo et al. Allium pallens is a separate species, but in Kew’s Plants of the world catalog it is a ssp. of Allium paniculatum.
