Description & Remarks
A low semi-shrub or a perennial herb, confined to Mediterranean bathas. Occasional specimens are found also in crevices of smooth-faced rock outcrops of the Negev and the Judean Desert. Following a taxonomic review of part of the genus by P.H. Davis, 8 subspecies are recognised in Ajuga chamaepytis. The common subspecies of Israel is displayed in the present page. The subspecies with yellow corolla, confined to rock crevices in Edom, Jordan is Ajuga chamaepytis subsp. tridatrylites. The taxon with a pink corolla, groing in rock crevices of S. Sinai belongs to subsp. tridatrylites as well.
Ajuga chamaepytis subsp. chia, collected at the vicinity of Jerusalem, was studied in the MSc thesis of Uzi Ravid. He found that the plant contains, among other substances, akdizones. These substances chemically resemble growth hormons of insects. Consuming the plant may disrupt the regular growth processes of these insects. Thus, these materials seem to act in chemical defence of the plant.
