Description & Remarks

A short geophyte, 4-8 cm tall. Bulb white, producing small bulblets around. Leaves narrow, much longer than the scape, 1.5-3 mm broad, with a white (pale) mid-stripe on the upper side. Leaf margin entire, naked. The inflorescence is a 2-5 flowered raceme. Pedicels spreading, thick at the base, a bit pending in fruiting stage, lower ones 30-45 mm long. The fruit is a wing-less capsule.

The plant is found in Italy, Balkans to Hungary, Crimea, east to the Caucasus. In our region recorded in W Turkey (Istanbul and Izmir), surprisingly was not recorded in Syria and Lebanon, expect for Mt Hermon.

It is important to study more the Hermon plants and understand if they really belong to O. refractum.
