- Edom (Common)
Description & Remarks
According to Bailey (1925) this is the old Latin name used for the plant by Pliny (in the 1st century). Interpretations of plant names in the Mishna (by Tkhoresh 1945) make ties between the Arabic name Za’atar, the Hebrew name Tzatra, which is the contemporary name for Satureja. To my non-expert (in linguistic investigations) ears, there seems to be a similar root to Satureja-Satureia, Tzatra, and Zaatar.
