Description & Remarks

A perennial flat herb. The leaves grow in a rosette on the ground, they sprout in early winter. They are glossy dark green, up to 60 cm long, wrinkled. The rosette’s diameter is up to 1 m. The flowers bloom in a cluster in the middle of the rosette. They are purple, with five petals and five stamens. Each flower has a small peduncle. Flower diameter is 2-3 cm. The fruit ripens at the end of spring, it is a tomato-like berry, it is yellow-orange and contains many seeds. The fruit’s smell is intoxicating, but the fruit and seeds contain alkaloids and they are poisonous.

Most of the plant’s parts contain hallucinogenic and narcotic substances, which are poisonous in large amounts. The plant was used in traditional medicine as a sedative, relaxants and as a love-drug. Many stories and legends are connected to it – the fruit is considered to be an aphrodisiac, the root – sedative. Carrying a man-like mandrake root will bring good luck to the carrier.
