Description & Remarks

A localized established alien. This very well known Europaean source for green leaves often used in salads, is restricted to the Mt. Scopus area in Jerusalem. It was present in the area already in 1967, when the new-old campus of the Hebrew University was rebuilt. It occupies secondary, man-made habitats such as roadsides, fences, and other disturbed habitats. Was it introduced to Israel by a botanist who did an experiment before 1948?, or was it an attempt of introducing a new crop by one of the inhabitants of the area ? or is it another accidental introduction as many other adventive plants in Israel?
