Description & Remarks

Following a profound study of all the specimens deposited at the herbarium of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem (HUJ), it became clear that Amaranthus viridis is a relatively rare plant in Israel. Most distribution dots of this species were in fact those of Amaranthus blitum. The first specimen of the two speciesd collected in Israel was of A. blitum (1902). In October 2006 the previous distribution maps were erased and the new ones (presented in this website), based on herbarium specimens and new double-checked observations, were prepared. The first information components are those of the herbarium specimens. Later, dots of A. viridis will be added only for specimens which have wrinkled fruits (see photo), non-shiny seeds, and flowers with perianth having 4-5 tepals.
